Help Scout vs Zoho Desk

Both bill per seat, so this decision comes down to capability, ownership and evidence rather than billing structure.

Which One to Pick

Pick Help Scout if

  • B2B teams with many agents and few accounts. Contact-based pricing with unlimited seats makes Help Scout dramatically cheaper than anything else here for this shape of business. It is the single strongest reason to choose it.
  • Teams who want simplicity as an outcome. Reviewers choose Help Scout because it does less. If your team has abandoned a more capable platform because nobody configured it, that is the relevant signal.
  • Startups replacing a shared Gmail account. The step up from an inbox to structured support without the overhead of a full platform.

Look elsewhere if: Help Scout is the wrong choice if autonomous resolution is your goal — reviewers state plainly that its AI trails competitors, and Fin, Ada or Tidio's Lyro will resolve more. It is also the wrong choice for complex support operations, large teams with intricate routing requirements, or anyone needing deep customisation, all of which reviewers name as limitations. And if you have a large customer base, contact-based pricing works against you: run the numbers before assuming $55 is cheap.

Pick Zoho Desk if

  • Cost-sensitive teams. If budget is the binding constraint, Zoho Desk is the answer and the gap to second place is large. Its AI-capable Professional tier at $23 undercuts most competitors' entry tiers, never mind their mid-tiers.
  • Existing Zoho customers. Native CRM integration gives agents full customer context without integration work, which is the same argument HubSpot and Salesforce make about their own suites.
  • Teams needing triage help more than autonomy. Zia's sentiment, field prediction and anomaly detection address the operational middle rather than trying to replace agents, which suits teams whose problem is organisation rather than volume.

Look elsewhere if: Zoho Desk is the wrong choice if you need strong autonomous resolution — that is not what Zia is for, and Fin, Ada or Lyro will resolve considerably more. It is also the wrong choice if you depend on responsive vendor support, which reviewers describe as limited even on enterprise plans. And the interface, while functional, requires tab-switching to view tickets from different channels according to reviewers, which is a daily irritation that cheaper software frequently carries.

Help Scout pricing

  • Free$0. Up to 5 users and 100 contacts a month
  • Standard$25 /user/mo. Up to 25 users. Unlimited contacts
  • Plus$45 /user/mo. Up to 50 users plus 25 light users
  • Pro$75 /user/mo. Unlimited users, minimum 10
  • AI Answers$0.75 /resolution. Add-on on every tier, three-month free trial

Help Scout has four tiers. Free is limited. Standard is $55 per month for 100 or more contacts and adds reports, surveys, customer properties and integrations. Plus is $83 per month and brings advanced workflows, teams and custom fields. Pro is quoted for 1,000 or more contacts with premium support, advanced security and onboarding assistance.

The critical detail is that these are contact prices, not seat prices. Unlimited agents are included. Comparing the $55 Standard tier against Zendesk's $69 per agent or Freshdesk's $18 per agent is therefore not a like-for-like comparison, and which looks cheaper depends entirely on the shape of your business.

Work through two examples. A B2B software company with fifteen support agents and 400 customers pays $83 a month on Plus. The same team on Freshdesk Pro at $59 per agent pays $885. That is a tenfold difference in Help Scout's favour. Now reverse it: a consumer brand with three agents and 50,000 contacts will be quoted on Pro and will very likely pay more than $177, which is what three Freshdesk Pro seats would cost.

This is the clearest case in this directory where you cannot shortlist on headline price. Model your own contact and agent counts before comparing anything.

Zoho Desk pricing

  • Express$7 /user/mo. Basic ticketing, email, automation, mobile app. AI Agents start here, bring-your-own-key or Zoho's own model
  • Standard$14 /user/mo. Multi-department, SLAs, workflow rules, Answer Bot
  • Professional$23 /user/mo. Zia AI, Blueprint automation, time tracking, advanced reporting
  • Enterprise$40 /user/mo. Guided conversations, multi-level IVR, live chat, role-based sharing
  • Zia Agents — model usage$0.50 /million tokens. Agents are free to build and run; you pay for the model. 30M tokens/month free on the Standard model tier, then $0.50/M; the Pro model tier gives 20M free then $1.50/M. Bringing your own OpenAI, Gemini or Claude key costs Zoho nothing

Zoho Desk has four published tiers. Express is $7 per user per month for basic ticketing, email support, automation and mobile access. Standard is $14 and adds multi-department ticketing, SLAs, workflow rules and the Answer Bot. Professional is $23 and brings Blueprint process automation, time tracking, advanced reporting and Zia AI. Enterprise is $40 and adds guided conversations, multi-level IVR and live chat. A free plan sits below Express.

Where the AI sits has moved, so read the tier list again if you last looked in the spring. AI Agents, with the token allowance, are on Express at $7. Zia's generative and predictive layer is Professional at $23. If you are evaluating Zoho Desk for AI capability, your price is $23 per user rather than the $40 we previously published, and the agent product costs you nothing above the entry tier except model usage.

For a ten-person team the arithmetic is stark: $400 a month on Zoho Enterprise against $590 on Freshdesk Pro and $1,490 on Zendesk Suite Professional. Even at the tier where Zia becomes available, Zoho is roughly a third cheaper than its nearest competitor and a quarter the price of Zendesk.

Reviewers do note a real caveat: upscaling with advanced features costs more than the tier list implies once add-ons and adjacent Zoho products enter the picture, and vendor support is described as limited even on enterprise plans. The saving is real; it is partly a saving on service.

Both Tools in Depth

Help Scout

Help Scout occupies a position almost nobody else in this directory competes for: it is deliberately the simplest option, and it has resisted the temptation to become a platform. The product is a shared inbox with good workflow automation and a sensible set of AI features layered on, and reviewers overwhelmingly cite that restraint as the reason they chose it. G2 lists just over 400 reviews at 4.4 stars — a smaller evidence base than Zendesk or Freshdesk, but a consistent one.

The pricing model is the genuinely distinctive thing, and it changes who the product suits. Help Scout charges by contacts rather than by agent. Standard is $55 a month for 100 or more contacts, Plus is $83, and Pro is quoted for 1,000 or more contacts. That means agent count is free — a twenty-person support team pays the same as a three-person team on the same contact volume.

For a B2B company with a small number of high-value accounts and a large support team, that inverts the economics of the entire category. For a consumer business with a hundred thousand customers, it does the opposite. Almost every other platform here charges per seat, so this is the one comparison where the pricing model, not the feature list, should drive the decision.

AI Drafts

Generates suggested replies drawing on past conversations and help articles, leaving a human to edit and send. This is the lower-risk half of AI support and frequently the higher-return one, since the human catches the error before the customer sees it. Help Scout has built its AI around this posture rather than around autonomous resolution.

AI Answers

A knowledge-base chatbot answering customers directly to reduce inbound volume. It is competent rather than leading — reviewers are explicit that Help Scout's AI trails competitors, and if autonomous resolution is your primary requirement this is not the product to choose.

Zoho Desk

Zoho Desk is the value floor of this category. At $7 per user per month for the Express tier it undercuts every other full help desk here — Freshdesk starts at $18, Zendesk at $25, and its top Enterprise tier at $40 costs less than Freshdesk's mid-tier. G2 lists more than 6,500 reviews at 4.4 stars, which is the second-largest independent evidence base in this directory after Zendesk itself and considerably larger than most of the AI-native entrants.

The AI layer is Zia, and it is more interesting than the price suggests. Rather than leading with autonomous resolution, Zia concentrates on the operational middle: sentiment analysis to prioritise, field prediction to auto-fill category and owner, anomaly detection to flag unusual ticket patterns before they become incidents, and an Answer Bot for knowledge-base deflection. That is a sensible set of capabilities for a support team that needs triage help more than it needs a replacement for its agents.

The catch used to be where Zia sat. When we first wrote this page the AI was gated to the $40 Enterprise tier; read again on Zoho's own pricing page in August 2026, Zia's generative and predictive features begin at Professional, the Answer Bot at Standard, and AI Agents at Express, the $7 entry tier. The gap between the headline price and the useful price has closed from nearly six times to about three, and on the agent product it has closed entirely.

Zia sentiment analysis

Zia reads the tone of incoming tickets so agents can prioritise the angry ones and respond appropriately. This is a genuinely useful application of AI to support and one of the more reliable ones, because misclassifying sentiment is cheap and correctable where misanswering a question is not.

Anomaly prediction

Zia detects unusual ticket volume or response patterns in real time and raises an alert. This is the sort of capability that sounds minor and matters during an outage, when the first signal that something is broken is frequently the support queue rather than monitoring.

Where Each One Breaks

Strengths and weaknesses on both sides, stated plainly.

Help Scout

What works

  • Contact-based pricing means unlimited agents at every tier
  • Reviewers consistently describe it as the easiest to set up
  • Clean, distraction-free interface built around a shared inbox
  • AI Drafts, AI Summarize and AI Answers cover the practical cases
  • Genuine free tier
  • Cheaper than Zendesk or Freshdesk for teams with many agents

The contact-based pricing model is Help Scout's genuine structural advantage and it is underappreciated. Unlimited agents at every tier means a fifteen-person B2B support team can run the whole operation for $83 a month, which nothing else in this directory approaches. Reviewers consistently praise three things: ease of setup, a clean distraction-free interface, and straightforward team collaboration through shared folders and notes. The AI features are sensibly chosen rather than ambitious — drafting, summarising and knowledge-base answering are the cases that actually reduce daily friction. And there is a real free tier, so evaluation costs nothing.

What does not

  • Reviewers say AI capability trails competitors
  • Not suited to complex support operations or large ticket volumes
  • Limited customisation and workflow automation
  • Contact-based pricing punishes large customer bases
  • Only around 400 G2 reviews, a modest evidence base

The AI is the honest weak point and reviewers say so directly: it lacks advanced capability compared with competitors. If your problem is ticket volume rather than ticket organisation, Help Scout will not solve it as well as Fin, Ada or even Tidio's Lyro. Reviewers also note it is not suited to complex support operations or large teams, and that customisation and workflow automation are limited — deliberate choices, but limitations nonetheless. The contact-based pricing that makes it cheap for B2B makes it expensive for consumer businesses, and the Pro tier for 1,000-plus contacts is quoted rather than published. Finally, at roughly 400 G2 reviews the independent evidence base is modest next to Zendesk's 6,200.

Zoho Desk

What works

  • $7 per user entry price, the lowest of any full help desk here
  • Genuine free plan
  • Zia AI covers sentiment, field prediction and anomaly detection
  • AI billed on tokens, with 30 million a month free, rather than per resolution
  • Over 6,500 G2 reviews, the second-largest evidence base in the category
  • Top tier is $40 where competitors charge $95 to $149

The price is the headline and it is not a gimmick. At $7 to $40 per user Zoho Desk is roughly half the cost of Freshdesk and a quarter of Zendesk at equivalent tiers, and it is a genuine full help desk rather than a stripped-down one. The evidence base is unusually strong for a budget product: more than 6,500 G2 reviews at 4.4 stars, second only to Zendesk in this directory and far ahead of most AI-native competitors. Reviewers praise ease of setup, the clean interface, high customisability and rich automation, plus seamless integration with widely used business applications. Zia's focus on sentiment, field prediction and anomaly detection is a sensible reading of where AI helps a support team that is not trying to eliminate its agents. And the free plan means evaluation costs nothing.

What does not

  • Zia's generative and predictive features start at the $23 Professional tier, not the $7 headline
  • Token metering is hard to forecast: nothing tells you how many tokens a month of your tickets will consume
  • Reviewers report having to switch tabs to see tickets from different channels
  • Vendor support described as limited even on enterprise plans
  • Interface is functional rather than pleasant

The gating is milder than it was but it still exists: Zia's generative and predictive features begin at Professional, $23 per user, so the $7 headline buys ticketing and an agent builder rather than the full intelligence layer. The token meter is the newer problem, because nothing on the pricing page tells you how many tokens a month of your own tickets will consume, and the 30 million free allowance is impossible to convert into tickets without running it. Reviewers note that upscaling with advanced features costs more than the tier list suggests, that admins have to switch between multiple tabs to view tickets from different channels, and — most significantly — that vendor support is limited even on enterprise plans. That last point is the real price of the discount: you are partly buying less service.

Where Each One Lands

Our reading of each, unchanged from its own review page.

Help Scout

Help Scout is the right answer for a specific shape of company and the wrong answer for most others, which is unusually clear-cut. If you are B2B with more agents than accounts, contact-based pricing with unlimited seats makes it dramatically cheaper than anything else here, and the simplicity is a feature rather than a compromise. If you need autonomous resolution at volume, or you have tens of thousands of contacts, look elsewhere — reviewers are explicit that the AI trails competitors and the pricing model turns against you as your customer base grows.

Zoho Desk

Zoho Desk is the correct answer when budget is the binding constraint, and the gap to second place is wide enough that it deserves a place on most shortlists. It has also become better value since we first wrote this page: Zia's AI now begins at the $23 Professional tier rather than the $40 Enterprise one, and AI Agents are on the $7 entry tier with 30 million model tokens a month included. The catch has moved rather than disappeared. A token meter is harder to budget than a per-resolution rate, because you cannot convert your ticket volume into tokens without running it. Accept that, plus a functional rather than pleasant interface, tab-switching between channels, and vendor support that reviewers describe as thin even on enterprise plans.

Frequently Asked

Questions people search about Help Scout and Zoho Desk.

Is Help Scout AI free?

No. There is a free tier of Help Scout itself with limited functionality, but the AI features sit on paid plans starting at $55 a month.

Is Zia included in Zoho Desk?

Not at the entry tier. Express at $7 gives you ticketing and AI Agents; Zia's generative and predictive features start at Professional, $23 per user. Budget from that number.

How does Help Scout pricing work?

On contacts, not seats — the number of distinct people you talk to each month. Add as many agents as you like without the bill moving, which is either a large saving or a nasty surprise depending on your ratio.

Is Zoho Desk good value?

At $7 for ticketing it is the cheapest credible help desk available, and at $23 with Zia it still undercuts most competitors' entry tiers.

What are the main Help Scout alternatives?

Front for shared-inbox collaboration, Freshdesk for a cheaper full platform, Zoho Desk at the budget end, and Intercom if you want the strongest AI agent attached.

Do I need other Zoho products?

No, but the value is highest if you do. As a standalone purchase the integration advantage that justifies Zoho's ecosystem disappears.

How much does Help Scout cost?

Standard is $55 per month for 100+ contacts, Plus is $83, and Pro is quoted for 1,000+ contacts. There is also a free tier. Crucially these are contact prices with unlimited agents included.

How much does Zoho Desk cost?

Express $7, Standard $14, Professional $23 and Enterprise $40 per user per month, plus a free plan. Zia AI starts at Professional.

Does Help Scout charge per agent?

No, and this is its main distinguishing feature. Pricing is by contact volume, so agent count is free, which makes it very cheap for teams with many agents and few customers.

How is Zoho's AI billed?

On tokens rather than resolutions. Zia Agents are free to build and run; Zoho-hosted models give 30 million tokens a month at no charge, then $0.50 per million on Standard and $1.50 on Pro. Bringing your own OpenAI, Gemini or Claude key costs nothing to Zoho.
