The short version
This website does not set any cookies. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies, or tracking pixels. There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser so it can remember something between page loads or visits. Most websites use them for analytics and advertising. We do not.
What we use instead
To understand which articles are useful, we rely on:
- Umami, which is cookie-free. Its own documentation says it does not use any cookies in the tracking code, that all data is anonymised, and that users cannot be identified or tracked between websites. It records the page, the referring URL, browser, operating system, device type and country.
- Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookie-free. It records that a page was viewed, along with the referring page, approximate location, browser and device type. It identifies visitors by a hash of the incoming request rather than by anything stored in your browser, discards that after 24 hours, and cannot follow you between websites.
- Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. These are reporting dashboards that show us which search terms lead people to our pages. They are connected to our website, not to your browser, and set no cookies on your device when you visit us.
What is stored in your browser
Two small preferences, and only if you create them yourself. If you use the light and dark toggle, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage. If you dismiss the newsletter prompt, that is remembered the same way. Neither is a cookie, neither is ever sent to us, and clearing your browser storage removes both.
Affiliate links: what happens when you click one
Some links on this site can be affiliate links. When you click one, you leave our website and arrive on the vendor’s website. At that point the vendor or their affiliate network may set a cookie in your browser recording that we referred you, so that we can be credited with a commission.
Three things to note:
- That cookie is set by the vendor, on the vendor’s domain, after you have left our site. We cannot read it.
- It costs you nothing and does not change the price you pay.
- The vendor’s own cookie and privacy policies apply to it. Their cookie banner, if they have one, is where you control it.
How to control cookies generally
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. Doing so will not affect this website, since we do not set any.
Global Privacy Control
We honour the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal. As we do not sell or share personal information, no action is required, but the signal is respected.
If this changes
If we ever add cookie-based analytics or advertising, we will publish a consent banner and update this page before any such cookie is set.
