The 7 categories, and what the software in each actually does
Every directory in this category sorts tools by what they are called. This one also sorts them by whether they can change anything. Each platform is tagged from the vendor’s own documentation with what it does when it works — changes something in your systems, answers from your documentation, or drafts for a human to send — and every count below is computed from those tags rather than written down.
01AI Agents & Chatbots
All 28 →Software sold to answer the customer directly, with nobody in the loop for the cases it handles. It is the largest group on this site and the one most people mean by the phrase AI customer service.
- 22 of 28can change something in your systems — issues the refund, updates the order, closes the ticket
- 5 of 28answer from your documentation — a good answer, but nothing in your systems moves
- 1 of 28draft for a human to send — a person still reads it and presses send
The question that separates them. Ask what the agent is permitted to change, and who has to build that connection. A tool that answers well from your help centre and a tool that can issue the refund are sold in almost identical language, and the gap between them is most of the implementation.

02Help Desk & Ticketing
All 14 →The inbox and the ticket queue, with AI layered on top. The important thing about this category is the order of the purchase: you are buying a system of record first and an AI second, and the system of record is the part you will still be using in five years.
- 7 of 14can change something in your systems — issues the refund, updates the order, closes the ticket
- 4 of 14answer from your documentation — a good answer, but nothing in your systems moves
- 3 of 14draft for a human to send — a person still reads it and presses send
The question that separates them. This is the category where all three answers appear in strength, because help desk with AI describes three different products — one that resolves the ticket, one that answers from documentation, and one that drafts for a human who sends it. Establish which one you are being shown before you compare a single price.

03E-commerce Support
All 6 →Support built around the order rather than the ticket — returns, refunds, and where is my order — wired directly into Shopify or WooCommerce.
- 4 of 6can change something in your systems — issues the refund, updates the order, closes the ticket
- 1 of 6answer from your documentation — a good answer, but nothing in your systems moves
- 1 of 6draft for a human to send — a person still reads it and presses send
The question that separates them. Reading the order back to the customer is table stakes and every vendor demos it. The question is which actions the agent may take on that order without a human, and whether your returns policy actually permits the ones it is capable of.

04Voice & Phone AI
All 9 →Agents that answer the phone rather than the chat widget. Metered by the minute, which makes them the one group whose bill scales with how long the conversation takes rather than how it ends.
- 9 of 9can change something in your systems — issues the refund, updates the order, closes the ticket
The question that separates them. Unanimous on one question and silent on the other. Every platform here reaches into a system of record, and hardly any of them will tell you what that costs. Budget from a per-minute rate you have been quoted, never from a page.

05Agent Assist & Copilots
All 5 →AI sitting beside the human agent instead of in front of the customer — suggesting the reply, surfacing the article, flagging the risk. The buyer is usually contact-centre operations rather than the head of support.
- 4 of 5can change something in your systems — issues the refund, updates the order, closes the ticket
- 1 of 5draft for a human to send — a person still reads it and presses send
The question that separates them. The category is named after assisting, and several of these have quietly grown past it. Ask whether you are buying real-time coaching for a person, or an autonomous layer that happens to be sold in the same product, because they carry different risk and different approval requirements.

06QA & Conversation Analytics
All 6 →Automatic scoring of support conversations, and increasingly the scoring of AI agents rather than of people. It is the youngest job on this list and the only one whose demand grew because of the other categories.
- 1 of 6can change something in your systems — issues the refund, updates the order, closes the ticket
- 4 of 6draft for a human to send — a person still reads it and presses send
- 1 of 6we have not classified — no live product to read documentation for
The question that separates them. The one group where the software mostly does not act, and it is honest about that — the tools grade, a person decides. When a QA vendor starts using the word agent in its marketing, the question to ask is whether anything it produces ever reaches a customer.

07Enterprise & CCaaS
All 15 →Full contact-centre suites, sold on multi-year terms through procurement. The AI is a line item on a platform contract you are signing for other reasons, which is the single most important thing to understand about buying here.
- 14 of 15can change something in your systems — issues the refund, updates the order, closes the ticket
- 1 of 15draft for a human to send — a person still reads it and presses send
The question that separates them. Almost everything here acts, and almost none of it acts out of the box. The reach is built by your team through service nodes, flows, Apex classes or API connectors, depending on the vendor. Cost the build, not the licence — that is where these deployments actually run long.

83 platforms in total, 82 of them carrying a tag read off the vendor’s own documentation and quoted on the tool’s page with the date we opened it. Every count here is derived from the directory itself rather than written into the prose, so the two cannot drift apart. If a number looks wrong, the row behind it is wrong — tell us and we will fix the row.
