Hiver vs Zendesk AI Agents

Both bill per seat, so this decision comes down to capability, ownership and evidence rather than billing structure.

Which One to Pick

Pick Hiver if

  • Small teams committed to Gmail. If a help desk migration has failed here before because nobody used it, Hiver is the answer to that specific failure.
  • Teams with modest volume. Tens of conversations a day rather than hundreds. Within that range the Gmail constraint costs you nothing.
  • Businesses with several shared addresses. Support@, billing@, orders@ all as managed queues is the most common reason people find Hiver.

Look elsewhere if: High-volume support and complex routing. Gmail is a ceiling, and above a few hundred conversations a day you will feel it. Also not for teams on Microsoft 365 — the product is built for Gmail, and Outlook-first alternatives exist.

Pick Zendesk AI Agents if

  • Enterprises with accumulated tooling. If your support stack has a decade of integrations behind it, Zendesk's ecosystem advantage is decisive and no comparison of agent quality will change that.
  • Teams that want one vendor. Zendesk now supplies the agent, the QA layer and the agent assist from one contract. In a fragmenting category that has genuine operational value.
  • Buyers worried about vendor stability. Zendesk is the acquirer in this market, not the acquisition target. For a three-year commitment that matters more than most feature comparisons.

Look elsewhere if: Zendesk is the wrong choice for small teams and for anyone who needs cost certainty up front. At $69 per agent for Suite Team before AI add-ons, a five-person team is paying meaningfully more than Zoho Desk or Freshdesk would charge for a similar outcome. It is also the wrong choice if you want the best available agent rather than the best available platform — Fin is the stronger agent, and teams whose only problem is ticket volume should compare the two directly rather than assume the incumbent wins.

Hiver pricing

  • Free$0. Shared inbox and ticketing, email and help centre
  • Growth$25 /user/mo. Annual. $35 billed monthly. AI Agents and AI Copilot included; AI Operating Procedures and AI Knowledge Builder marked COMING SOON
  • Pro$55 /user/mo. Annual. $65 billed monthly. Customer portal, SLAs, CSAT, API access
  • Elite$85 /user/mo. Annual. $95 billed monthly. AI QA, skill-based routing, SSO and custom roles
  • Voice add-on (Omni)$30 /voice seat/mo. 1,000 pooled minutes per voice seat, then $0.03 a minute

Hiver publishes per-seat pricing on both product lines, and the tiers are the same for each: Growth $25, Pro $55 and Elite $85 per user per month on annual billing, with a free plan below them.

Monthly billing is $35, $65 and $95, which is 40% more at the entry tier against a median annual discount of about 20% across the platforms we track. Voice on Omni is a $30 per seat add-on with 1,000 pooled minutes and $0.03 a minute after.

The honest comparison is against Google Workspace plus nothing. If your team currently shares an inbox by shouting across the room, Hiver's per-seat cost buys real structure for less than a full platform. Against Freshdesk at $18 or Zoho at $7 the calculus changes: those are complete platforms with stronger automation. Hiver's premium is for not making your team learn anything.

Zendesk AI Agents pricing

  • Support Team$19 /agent/mo billed annually. Email and ticketing, automations and triggers
  • Suite Team$55 /agent/mo billed annually. Adds AI agents and AI knowledge base across unified channels
  • Suite Professional$115 /agent/mo billed annually. Adds admin copilot and app builder
  • Suite EnterpriseCustom. Quoted
  • Copilot add-on$50 /agent/mo billed annually. On top of the seat
  • Workforce Engagement add-on$50 /agent/mo billed annually. On top of the seat
  • Contact Center add-on$83 /agent/mo billed annually. On top of the seat

Zendesk publishes per-seat pricing across three tiers. Support Team runs $25 per agent per month for ticketing and basic reporting. Suite Team at $69 adds multi-channel support, help centre and AI tools. Suite Professional at $149 brings advanced workflows, custom dashboards and SLAs. Suite Enterprise is quoted rather than published.

The published figures are the beginning rather than the end of the calculation. The AI capability most buyers are actually shopping for — autonomous agents, Copilot, QA — arrives through add-ons on top of the seat price. G2 reviewers repeatedly raise total cost of ownership as the principal complaint, noting specifically that the Copilot add-on typically has to be licensed across the whole team.

Compared against the alternatives, Zendesk sits at the premium end of per-seat pricing. Freshdesk runs $18 to $95 per agent for a broadly comparable feature set, and Zoho Desk starts at $7. Against per-resolution competitors the comparison is harder: Zendesk charges whether or not the AI resolves anything, which is worse at low volume and considerably better at high volume than Intercom's $0.99 per resolution.

The honest summary on price is that Zendesk is not expensive per seat so much as expensive in aggregate, and that the aggregate is difficult to establish without a sales conversation. Model the seats, the AI add-ons and the QA licences together before comparing against anything else.

Both Tools in Depth

Hiver

Hiver's insight is behavioural rather than technical. Plenty of small teams have bought a help desk, found their agents kept working in Gmail anyway, and ended up with a ticketing system that nobody updated.

So Hiver puts the help desk inside Gmail. Assignment, status, notes, SLAs and analytics all appear in the Gmail interface your team already lives in. There is nothing new to learn, which is precisely the point.

The limit is the same as the strength. You are bound by what Gmail can do, and at genuine scale a purpose-built platform will out-perform an inbox with a layer on top.

Shared inboxes in Gmail

The core feature and the reason to buy. Support@ becomes a queue with assignment and status without anyone leaving the interface they use for everything else. Adoption problems disappear because there is no new tool.

SLAs and automation

Competent rules and SLA tracking. Less powerful than Zendesk or Freshdesk automation, and sufficient for the team size Hiver targets.

Zendesk AI Agents

Zendesk is the default against which every other product in this directory positions itself, and has been for well over a decade. It is the platform most support teams have either used or evaluated, with G2 listing more than 6,200 reviews at an average of 4.3 stars — by far the largest review base in the category. That scale is the product's central characteristic. Whatever Zendesk lacks in elegance it makes up in the fact that almost every tool, CRM and telephony provider your company already runs has a Zendesk integration.

What has changed recently is how Zendesk is acquiring its AI capability. Rather than building an agent from scratch, the company has bought three: Klaus, the QA platform now rebranded Zendesk QA; Ultimate, a service automation provider; and Forethought, acquired in March 2026 in a deal reported at over $200 million and completed within a fortnight of announcement. One analysis characterised this as a $500 million acquisition sprint across seven AI deals in three years. For buyers, that consolidation cuts both ways — fewer vendors to manage, but a stack whose components were designed by different teams and are still being knitted together.

The practical consequence is that Zendesk is now the low-risk choice in a category where four platforms have already been absorbed. If your primary concern is that your vendor will be bought and its roadmap redirected, Zendesk is the acquirer rather than the target. If your primary concern is cost predictability, it is one of the harder products in this directory to model, because the AI capability that matters is priced separately from the seats that carry it.

AI agents and the resolution platform

Zendesk's autonomous agents handle conversations end to end using natural language understanding, deflecting tickets and routing what they cannot resolve. Forethought's self-learning agents are being folded into what Zendesk calls its Resolution Platform, which is the company's explicit answer to Intercom's Fin. The capability is credible but newer than the platform around it, and buyers evaluating Zendesk in 2026 are evaluating an agent that is still being integrated rather than one that grew up inside the product.

Agent Copilot

Copilot sits beside human agents suggesting replies, surfacing context and recommending next steps. G2 reviewers consistently describe it as useful, and equally consistently object to the licensing: the add-on generally has to be purchased across all agents rather than only for the people who will use it. On a fifty-agent team where fifteen would benefit, that pricing structure materially changes the calculation.

Where Each One Breaks

Strengths and weaknesses on both sides, stated plainly.

Hiver

What works

  • The help desk lives inside Gmail, which removes the adoption problem outright
  • AI Agents and AI Copilot are bundled into the $25 tier rather than sold as an add-on
  • Genuine free plan, and a free trial that needs no sales call
  • Multiple shared inboxes handled cleanly: support@, billing@, orders@
  • Hiver Omni gives the same team a browser-based option if Gmail stops fitting

Solves adoption by removing the new interface entirely. Published affordable pricing on both product lines, with the AI bundled rather than sold as an add-on. Multiple shared inboxes handled cleanly. Genuinely fast to deploy.

What does not

  • The agentic capability the marketing leads on is marked coming soon on the pricing page
  • Monthly billing costs 40% more than annual at the entry tier: $35 against $25
  • Every plan button is Book a demo, including the free one
  • Gmail is a ceiling above a few hundred conversations a day
  • No use to teams outside Google Workspace unless they take Omni instead

The agentic story is ahead of the product: the same site that walks an agent through a Stripe refund marks AI Operating Procedures coming soon on every plan. Constrained by Gmail unless you move to Omni. Automation is weaker than dedicated platforms. Monthly billing carries an unusually steep 40% premium at the entry tier.

Zendesk AI Agents

What works

  • Largest integration ecosystem in customer support software
  • Has absorbed Klaus, Ultimate and Forethought, reducing vendor sprawl
  • Published per-seat pricing across three of four tiers
  • Genuinely scales from small teams to very large contact centres
  • Strong reporting through Explore
  • AI agents, QA and agent assist now available from one contract

Zendesk's ecosystem is its genuine and durable advantage. With more than 6,200 G2 reviews at 4.3 stars it also has the largest body of independent evidence in the category, which is worth something when newer competitors have a few hundred reviews or none. Reviewers consistently praise Explore reporting for the quality of business decisions it supports, and describe ticket handling and teammate collaboration as straightforward. The recent acquisition strategy has real buyer benefit too: Klaus, Ultimate and Forethought bring capabilities that would otherwise require three additional vendors, three contracts and three integrations. And in a market where four platforms in this directory have been absorbed since 2024, buying from the acquirer removes a category of risk entirely.

What does not

  • AI capability sits behind add-ons layered on seat cost
  • Total cost of ownership is difficult to establish before a quote
  • Interface is widely described as fragmented
  • Copilot add-on must typically be bought for all agents, not just those who need it
  • Suite Professional at $149/agent/month is expensive at scale
  • Newly acquired products are still being integrated

The pricing model is the recurring complaint and it is structural rather than a matter of tiers. G2 reviewers repeatedly note that total cost of ownership climbs sharply once the AI Copilot add-on is included, and that the add-on generally has to be purchased for every agent regardless of how many will use it. The interface attracts consistent criticism as fragmented and difficult to navigate, which is the usual cost of a platform that has accumulated a decade of features. The AI capability, while credible, is newer than the platform and assembled from acquisitions rather than grown in place — Forethought closed in March 2026, so anyone evaluating it now is evaluating an integration in progress. Finally, at $149 per agent for Suite Professional, Zendesk is simply expensive relative to Freshdesk and Zoho Desk for teams that will not use its depth.

Where Each One Lands

Our reading of each, unchanged from its own review page.

Hiver

Hiver is the right buy when your problem is adoption rather than capability. A team that has already abandoned one help desk because agents kept replying from Gmail will use Hiver, and using a weaker tool beats not using a stronger one. Below a few hundred conversations a day the Gmail ceiling is invisible. Above that, or if you need serious routing and automation, Freshdesk and Zoho Desk are both cheaper per seat and considerably more capable — you would just have to persuade your team to open them.

Zendesk AI Agents

Zendesk is the safe answer rather than the best answer, and for a great many teams safe is correct. Its ecosystem is unmatched, its review base is the largest in the category, and it is now the consolidator rather than a consolidation target, which removes a real risk from any multi-year commitment. The costs are a fragmented interface, AI capability that is still being integrated from three acquisitions, and a total price that is genuinely hard to establish before a quote. Model the seats, the AI add-ons and the QA licences together, then compare that number against Freshdesk. If Zendesk still wins, buy it with confidence.

Frequently Asked

Questions people search about Hiver and Zendesk AI Agents.

What is Hiver used for?

Turning Gmail into a help desk — shared inboxes with assignment, status, SLAs and analytics, without leaving the Gmail interface.

Does Zendesk have AI agents?

Yes, across several products: AI agents for autonomous resolution, Copilot for agent assistance, and intelligent triage for routing. They sit at different tiers, which is the part buyers misjudge.

How much does Hiver cost?

Growth $25, Pro $55 and Elite $85 per user per month on annual billing, or $35, $65 and $95 monthly, with a free plan below. Same tiers for Hiver in Gmail and Hiver Omni.

How do I use Zendesk AI agents?

Enable them in the admin centre, point them at your help centre, then build answer flows. Actions against your own systems need marketplace connectors or custom development.

Does Hiver work with Outlook?

It is built for Gmail and Google Workspace. Microsoft 365 teams should look at Outlook-first alternatives instead.

Is Zendesk AI included in my plan?

Partly. Some capability is in Suite tiers, more sits behind the Advanced AI add-on, and the acquired Klaus and Ultimate features are priced separately again. Get the specific list in writing before signing.

Is Hiver better than Freshdesk?

Not on capability — Freshdesk has stronger automation and AI for a similar price. Hiver is better if your team will actually use it and would ignore Freshdesk.

How much does Zendesk cost?

Published per-seat pricing runs $25 for Support Team, $69 for Suite Team and $149 for Suite Professional, with Suite Enterprise quoted. AI agents, Copilot and QA are add-ons on top of those figures.

Does Hiver have AI?

Yes, bundled from the $25 Growth tier: tagging, urgency and sentiment detection, summarisation, reply drafting and FAQ answers. The agentic parts Hiver markets — running procedures across Salesforce, NetSuite and Stripe — depend on AI Operating Procedures, which its own pricing page marks coming soon.

Is Zendesk AI included in the seat price?

Partly. Suite Team includes some AI tooling, but the capabilities most buyers shop for arrive as add-ons. Reviewers specifically note that Copilot generally has to be licensed across all agents.
