What the score measures. Five things we can verify from published material: whether pricing is transparent, whether the product can act on your systems or only answer from documents, whether the vendor still owns its own roadmap, how much independent review evidence exists, and whether the bill stays predictable as volume grows. BEST FOR: ENTERPRISES WITH HEAVY WHATSAPP AND WEB MESSAGING VOLUME · LAST UPDATED 2026-07-30

LivePerson in depth

LivePerson has been in conversational commerce and support longer than almost anyone, and its strength remains messaging at genuine enterprise volume — WhatsApp, web chat and SMS for brands handling millions of conversations.

The context a buyer should know is commercial. LivePerson has had a difficult period, with significant share price decline and restructuring reported over recent years. That does not make the product bad, and it is a fair input to a multi-year contract decision — vendor stability is part of what you are buying.

What it does

  • Enterprise messaging across WhatsApp, web and SMS
  • AI agents and agent assistance
  • Conversational analytics
  • Contact centre integrations
  • Voice capability alongside messaging
  • Large-scale message handling
More detail on how it works

It competes against the AI layers of the big contact centre platforms and against messaging specialists, with scale and WhatsApp depth as its arguments.

Messaging at scale

The core strength. Handling very high message volumes across WhatsApp, web and SMS reliably is harder than it sounds, and LivePerson's experience here is real.

WhatsApp depth

Genuinely strong, which matters enormously for brands in markets where WhatsApp is the default support channel — much of Latin America, South Asia and southern Europe.

AI layer

Agents and assistance across messaging. Competent platform AI; specialist agents resolve more, and LivePerson's advantage is scale and channel rather than resolution quality.

Setting LivePerson up

Realistic time to a working deployment: Months. These are the standard steps for this category. We have not published a walkthrough specific to this tool yet.

  1. 01

    Scoping and statement of work

Weeks with the vendor or a partner before anything is built. Implementation is usually a separate line item from licences.

  2. 02

    Telephony and channel migration

Numbers, carriers, routing, recording and compliance retention. Infrastructure work with lead times.

  3. 03

    Integrate CRM and back office

The bulk of the engineering. Agent desktop, screen pop, and whatever the AI needs to read.

  4. 04

    Configure the AI layer

Increasingly bundled but usually a separate licence. Confirm which AI features your contract actually includes.

  5. 05

    Train agents and supervisors

New desktop, new workflows, new reporting. Budget real hours, not a webinar.

  6. 06

    Phased cutover

By queue or by region. Nobody moves a whole contact centre in one weekend twice.

The step that takes longer than they imply. Everything. Contact centre platforms are implementation projects with statements of work, not software you switch on.

What the AI actually does

Every platform here says “AI agent”. It covers a bot that reads your help centre and a system that can refund a customer. This is which one you are buying.

Acts on your systems

LivePerson splits acting into two mechanisms with a documented rule for choosing between them, and publishes a hard limit most vendors leave you to discover: an API integration call times out at 20 seconds, retries three times inside that window, and none of it is configurable.

  • In the documentation's own words, API integrations let Conversation Builder perform some action or access the features or data of an external service, with retrieving a product catalogue as the worked example
  • The limit is stated rather than buried: a 20-second timeout with three retries inside it, explicitly not configurable, which is a real constraint if the system you are calling is slow
  • Anything more than a single call or a short sequence is meant to go to LivePerson Functions instead, a serverless layer for custom logic, and the documentation says which to use when
  • Escalation to a human is its own integration type rather than a side effect, alongside email, file, KnowledgeAI and web view integrations
  • The product page publishes five performance figures — 30% after-hours lead completion, 30% less human handling time, twice the lead qualification of scripted bots, up to 60% cost reduction and a five-point NPS gain — and attaches a measured population to none of them

Who Should Use It

The second list is the more useful one.

Enterprises with heavy WhatsApp volume

In markets where WhatsApp is the default support channel, LivePerson's depth is a genuine advantage.

Very high message volume operations

Millions of conversations, where scale and reliability matter more than incremental resolution quality.

Existing customers

For whom the practical question is roadmap and renewal terms rather than a fresh evaluation.

Who should look elsewhere. Small and mid-market teams, and anyone for whom vendor stability is a primary concern in a multi-year commitment. Also not the choice if resolution quality is your main criterion — specialist agents are better at that.

Strengths and Weaknesses

What Works

  • Deep experience with messaging at enterprise scale.

What Does Not

  • Reported commercial difficulty and restructuring, which is a fair input to a multi-year decision.
  • Platform AI is not the equal of specialist agents.
  • Facing pressure from contact centre platforms adding native messaging.

LivePerson pricing

LivePerson does not publish pricing. Expect enterprise quotes based on conversation or message volume.

Ask about contract length and termination terms with more than usual care, given the commercial situation. A long term with a vendor under pressure is a risk worth pricing.

The full arithmetic

Compare against the messaging capability in Genesys and NICE, and against Quiq or Sprinklr if channel breadth is the requirement.

Custom and private pricing

LivePerson does not publish a rate. You have to ask, which means a sales conversation before you can compare it against anything else on this site.

Contact sales  ↗

Ask two things on that call: what triggers a billable event, and what the rate is at twice your current volume.

Our Recommendation

Who we would tell to buy this, and who we would not.

LivePerson's messaging capability at enterprise scale is real, and its WhatsApp depth is a genuine advantage for brands in markets where that is the default support channel. Two things belong in the decision. Its platform AI is not the equal of specialist agents, so buy it for channel and scale rather than for resolution quality. And the reported commercial difficulty is a legitimate input to a multi-year contract — not a reason to exclude it, but a reason to look carefully at term length and termination terms before signing.
